Quality and stable power supply is critically important in many areas: in hospitals, at production facilities, in social institutions.
Responsible electricity consumers require at least two power sources: one for normal operation, and the second and subsequent ones are backup: they automatically switch on in case of problems in the power grid.
Switching to a backup power source is performed by an Automatic Transfer Switch (ATS) system. In the article, we will analyze how it works, what components it consists of, and the convenience of ready-made ATS solutions from ONI.
What is ATS?
An Automatic Transfer Switch (ATS) system detects unacceptable deviations in power grid parameters and transfers power supply to backup power sources without human intervention. This maintains uninterrupted operation of critical equipment. Once the grid voltage stabilizes, the ATS returns the power supply to the previous mode.
Unacceptable deviations in power supply parameters include:
- Break of one of the phases of the supply network.
- Overvoltage/undervoltage of the supply network.
- Phase voltage asymmetry of the supply network.
- Violation of phase sequence.
The response time of modern ATS usually ranges from
What does an ATS system consist of?
An automatic transfer switch includes several main elements:
- Logic relay or controller – the main component of the ATS. It manages all processes: records failures, analyzes voltage and sends a command to switch.
- Phase monitoring relay – monitors power grid parameters and detects unacceptable deviations.
- Contactors, switches or circuit breakers – the "executors" of the controller's commands. They physically switch power sources by opening and closing the circuit.
- Backup power source. Usually, this is a diesel generator, an uninterruptible power supply, or an alternative grid line.
The ATS system may also include additional devices: voltage stabilizers, temperature sensors, additional overload protection levels.
What is included in ONI's ATS solutions?
An automatic transfer switch is a multi-component system. It is important not only the quality of each element, but also their perfect compatibility and proper operation as a whole. For the convenience of designers and consumers, ONI offers ready-made ATS solutions.
The composition of typical ONI ATS solutions includes:
- Electrical schematic diagrams in the most common formats for design with editing capability.
- Operating instructions.
- Programs for logic relays and operator panels in the form of source code, open for editing.
- Specifications for ordering and assembling ATS systems.
All solutions are debugged in laboratory and real conditions and include all necessary documentation and software. Files are provided in an editable format so you can easily integrate the solution into your facility.
We offer solutions for loads up to 6300 A. The following options are available for systems:
- ATS for one group of consumers from two independent sources – 2 variants.
- ATS for two groups of consumers from two independent sources with bus-sectioning – 2 variants.
- ATS for one group of consumers from two independent sources with automatic switching to a diesel generator set.
- ATS for one group of consumers from one source with automatic switching to a diesel generator set.
- ATS for two groups of consumers from two sources with bus-sectioning and automatic switching to a diesel generator set.
