Three devices in one housing: a joint solution from IEK and "VEGA" for lighting control

The first street lanterns appeared in Moscow in 1730. Back then, lamplighters had to climb a ladder to each of them and light them manually. Since then, city lighting has changed incredibly: oil lamps have been replaced by energy-efficient LED ones, and their operation has become fully automated.

How does street lighting work nowadays? Who (or what) is now responsible for the light on city streets? And what is the advantage of the solution for outdoor lighting control from IEK and "VEGA"?

 What is an ASUNO and how does it work?

 ASUNO is an Automated Street Lighting Control System. As the name implies, it is responsible for ensuring that the streets are lit during dark hours. ASUNO consists of several components:

 1.      SHUNO. If you look closely at a line of lanterns, on one of them you will see a small metal housing  — this is the Street Lighting Control Cabinet (SHUNO), a kind of lamplighter of the XXI century. It automatically turns the luminaires on and off on the controlled section, and also collects data on their energy consumption, condition, and grid status.

2.      Software, which connects several SHUNOs through a cellular operator. The program collects and systematizes the received information and displays it on dispatchers' monitors.

3.      Dispatcher station. The entire system is managed from here. Specialists process the received information, control the operation of street lighting, and create its operation scenarios.

What is special about the "VEGA" ASUNO solution?

 A standard street lighting control cabinet includes the following devices:

·        Contactor — for switching the load on/off,

·        Electricity meter — for energy consumption accounting,

·        Controller — for configuring operating modes.

The peculiarity of the "VEGA" ASUNO system is that the controller and contactor are built into the body of the TORESCO IEK meter: 3 devices in one housing! This solution significantly saves space in the electrical cabinet and reduces its cost. At the same time, the technical capabilities of the "VEGA" ASUNO are in no way inferior to similar solutions with a split cabinet architecture.

The solution for SHUNO from IEK and "VEGA" combines three devices in one housing.

What can "VEGA" ASUNO do?

The "VEGA" ASUNO solution has extensive functionality and meets modern requirements for "smart" systems. For example, the system can:

·        Automatically, without connection to the dispatch center, control lighting according to a set schedule with minute accuracy throughout the year.

·        Manually turn luminaires on and off by operator command if necessary.

·        Collect information on energy consumption, condition of luminaires and the cabinet itself, and perform equipment diagnostics: on schedule or by dispatcher command.

·        Generate reports based on collected information and archive them. Data is stored in the meter for up to 10 years.

·        Update software automatically or by dispatcher command.

The collection, storage, and transmission of information is handled by the multifunctional TORESCO IEK electricity meter series — a modern device complying with current regulatory framework. The metering device measures numerous parameters with high accuracy and updates data every half second. Its warranty is 5 years, and service life is 30 years.

Where is it used?

"VEGA" ASUNO has already been implemented in many Russian cities. The solution is successfully used in street lighting systems of modern schools, private housing sectors, and industrial enterprises in Kurgan, Syzran, Nizhny Novgorod, Kstovo, and other settlements.

 "VEGA" ASUNO allows efficient lighting management, turning luminaires on and off exactly when and where it is really needed, thereby saving electricity while complying with lighting standards. The automatic method of switching luminaires on/off minimizes labor costs for operating personnel for manual switching. And remote monitoring of lighting line conditions allows timely detection of luminaire group failures, thereby reducing the time to restore street lighting.
